A successful project demands a solid understanding of a business's competitive advantages, brand image, customers, and competition. One of the major challenges with a new brand is creating a unique identity. A sustainable brand image is not obtained by using the latest design trends as crutches. Adding an arbitrary "swoosh" to a logo in an industry littered with swoosh logos will not set a company's product or service apart from the competition. Creating a 'techy' website with grid patterns and small illegible font types may be ideal for a distinct audience, but may not be appropriate for your target market.

It is common for a business to assess the competition and try to determine who they would like to be. Although research and benchmarking your competition can be very useful at times, we believe that true success does not come from borrowing someone else’s model.
